HIRING NOTICE FOR
ARTISTIC AND PRODUCTION STAFF 2023– 2024 SEASON

SMT invites applications from experienced Artistic/Production Staff for the following shows.

Positions that are available for each show are Director, Music Director, Choreographer, Producer(s), Stage Manager

Please note: All artistic and production staff, performers and volunteers are required to be fully vaccinated and to show proof of vaccination to participate.

Xanadu – November 2023

Based on the Universal Pictures film with screenplay by Richard Danus & Marc Rubel

Music & Lyrics by Jeff Lynne, Book by Douglas Carter Beane and John Farrar

This Tony Award nominated, hilarious musical adventure about following your dreams despite the limitations others set for you, based on the 1980 cult classic film starring Olivia Newton-John and Gene Kelly.

Greek muse, Kira, descends from Mount Olympus to Venice Beach, California in 1980 to inspire a struggling artist, Sonny, to achieve the greatest artistic creation of all time – the first ROLLER DISCO! When Kira falls into forbidden love with the mortal Sonny, her jealous sisters take advantage of the situation, and chaos abounds.

Freaky Friday – February 2024

A new musical adaptation of the classic novel by Mary Rodgers and the hit Disney films.

Music by Tom Kitt, Lyrics by Brian Yorkey, Book by Bridget Carpenter

When an overworked mother and her teenage daughter magically swap bodies, they have just one day to put things right again. Freaky Friday, a new musical based on the celebrated novel by Mary Rodgers and the hit Disney films, is a heartfelt, comedic, and unexpectedly emotional update on an American classic.

By spending a day in each other’s shoes, Katherine and Ellie come to appreciate one another’s struggles, learn self-acceptance, and realize the immeasurable love and mutual respect that bond a mother and daughter.

Rocky Horror Show – May 2024

Book, Music and Lyrics: Richard O’Brien

In this cult classic sweethearts Brad and Janet find themselves stranded in a storm at the eerie mansion of Dr. Frank-N-Furter just as he is about to unveil his latest creation: the muscular Rocky.

Join us as we Time Warp our way through a rock musical full of wild characters in this deliberately kitschy rock ‘n’ roll science fiction goth musical for the first time on the Scarborough Village stage.

General information:

Scarborough Music Theatre is a non-union, non-profit community theatre group. We do not engage in Equity/ACTRA contracts.

The committee will attempt to interview as many people as possible but cannot guarantee interviews to all applicants.

All applicants will receive an email confirming receipt of their application.

We accept both individual and team applications. For team applications, individual resumes are required for each member. Members of team applications will be asked if they are willing to be considered separately for positions. Team applications may also include Producers and Stage Managers as part of the application.

Those who are hired will be required to attend an orientation session.

A nominal honorarium is available for each of these positions.

 

Notes:

The team hired for the first show (November 2023) of the season will be required to work in conjunction with the team from our SMTY show so that the set design/technical elements work for both shows.

Rehearsals are traditionally held Monday and Wednesday evenings between 7:00pm and 10:30pm, and Sunday afternoons between 12:00pm and 6:00pm*. The rehearsal period is typically 7-8 weeks. Sunday evening rehearsals are typically added only in the two weeks prior to opening, once the production has moved into the theatre. *Rehearsal times may be modified according to the needs of the production but changes must be approved.

Additional rehearsals may be scheduled on Tuesday and/or Thursday evenings at the discretion of the Artistic Staff and the Producers to meet the requirements of the show.

The work of the Director and Choreographer end officially at the conclusion of the Preview Performance; the Music Director’s work ends officially on closing night. The Stage Manager and Producer(s) positions end after the presentation of their final report to the Board of Directors.

Shows run for 11 performances over 3 weeks — Thursday to Sunday in Weeks 1 and 2, Thursday to Saturday in Week 3; Additional performances may be added on the Wednesday evenings or Saturday afternoons in Weeks 2 and 3 if demand for tickets is high. Stage Manager, Music Director and Producers must be available for extra performances.

SMT gives preference to technically simpler shows.

Performances are at the Scarborough Village Theatre, part of the Scarborough Village Recreation Centre at 3600 Kingston Road (Kingston Rd. and Markham Rd.).

Scarborough Village Theatre has a thrust stage with audience seating on 3 sides
